Best in Beauty 2016 - Like Honey

Best in Beauty 2016

I love reading everyone's end of the year favorites, especially when it comes to beauty and skincare products! I'm always up to trying new things and comparing other's favorites to my own.

Since it's officially 2017, I thought I'd lay out some of my favorite products, new and old, that I tried and loved last year. Here we go!

LORAC Unzipped Gold Palette | This one barely made the 2016 cut since I didn't receive it until Christmas, but it sure makes up for any time I wasted trying other products. It's amazingly buttery, super pigmented and has such a great natural collection of shades that can be worn in so many ways. I love the color Unleashed layered over my L'Oreal Amber Rush shadow and the shade Unlocked makes a great highlight!

L'Oreal Infallible 24 Hour Shadows in Amber Rush & Bronzed Taupe | Confession: I hate individual shadows. It's just so much easier to have all your colors in one or two packages instead of a bunch of singles. However, these metallic beauties from L'Oreal have completely won me over. They are SO pigmented and super foiled. Don't try to put them on wet, though as that makes them look choppy and gross. I recommend layering up and working quickly since their 24 Hour claim is no joke. They do blend easily but only for the first minute or so. One of my favorite looks is the Amber Rush shade with a little bit of Unleashed from the LORAC Gold palette layered on top. STUNNER.

L'Oreal Voluminous Mascara | I tend to search for two types of mascara--one for volume and one for length--and layer them to get the best of both, since very few mascaras that claim to do both deliver. This one is a great volumizer and perfect for what I was looking for. It's pitch black, easy to remove and doesn't clump but still leaves a full, thick lash.

Covergirl Super Sizer Mascara | This is my holy grail mascara and has been a total game changer for my little old lashes. I have stick straight, thin pathetic lashes that have a very hard time holding curl, partly due to my slightly hooded eyelids. This mascara holds curl SO much longer (though still not as long as I'd like) and the wand is perfect for getting every. single. lash. I love love love this and will be stocking up on it forever!

NYX Micro Brow Pencil | If you love the Anastasia Beverly Hills pencil but don't want to spend the $$$, this NYX Micro Brow pencil is a perfect dupe! It comes in a ton of shades, applies smoothly and evenly, and the micro tip makes it super easy to draw on a natural, real looking brow. I've found that the spoolie on the end just kind of erases any pencil marks though, so beware.

Essence Make Me Brow Gel | This super cheap tinted brow gel is a great alternative to the powder/clear gel combo. If you've got super crazy brows, this may not be enough to tame them, but for me it's just the thing to keep things in place as well as cover up a couple of sparse patches I have in my arches. I have found this works best by applying straight from the tube and then blending out with a secondary spoolie rather than the wand it comes with. When I try to use the wand it just keeps packing on product instead of blending it out. I just use the spoolie on the end of my NYX Micro Brow ;)

NARS Velvet Matte Lip Pencil in Cruella | After receiving this in the 2015 Sephora birthday gift, I fell in love and never looked back. I love the smooth texture and easy application of the NARS pencils and this shade is just stunning. It's the perfect cool toned red for my warm skin tone and is my go-to red lip for 2 years running.

Sonia Kashuk Velvety Matte Lip Crayon in Berry Nude | If you got the aforementioned Sephora birthday gift set, you'll remember the beautiful satin pencil in the shade Rikugien. While I do still love that one, I found the perfect drugstore dupe for it for less than half the cost and it's slightly more matte (which I love)! You can check out the comparison and swatches in this blog post, but even if you've never tried the NARS pencils, these Sonia Kashuk dupes are sure to please.

Covergirl Katy Kat Matte Lipstick in Catoure | I'm not a huge fan of Covergirl lip products, but this super smooth and "my-lips-but-better" shade totally stole my heart. It's a gorgeous mauve and perfect for all seasons plus the formula has great staying power and is totally moisturizing!

L'Oreal Colour Riche Lipcolour in Fairest Nude | L'Oreal is hands down my favorite drugstore makeup brand, at least when it comes to lip products. Their Colour Riche line has a ton of shades and is super creamy and moisturizing but still has great color payoff and lasting power. This was a new one to my collection this year and my first "nude" lippie! Its a great pinky-nude and looks great on my warmer skin tone.

NYX Liquid Suede Cream Lipstick in Soft Spoken | A great dupe for the Kylie Jenner lip kit, this NYX liquid lip formula knocks it out of the park. Yes, its a little drying like any liquid lip product, but it doesn't totally wreck my lips after one wear, has amazing pigmentation and opacity, and is easy peasy to apply. There is a large shade range, but this year was all about those Kylie mauves and nudes, so of course this one was the winner.

Perfectly Posh Night & Day Moisturizer | If you're looking for a natural, sensitive moisturizer that smells yummy and calms your skin this Perfectly Posh one is perfect for you! I felt like all the other moisturizers I was using were just keeping me dry and covering up the dry skin temporarily. Then I got a sample of this from my lovely sister-in-law (check out her Posh page here to shop more natural beauty products under $25!) and I fell in love. I used it for about 2 weeks and instantly noticed a change in my skin. My T-Zone was back to being slightly oily and the rest of my skin was no longer dry. I know, an oily T-Zone isn't something most people get excited about, but y'all, I'd been battling this dry skin mess since I got pregnant with Lucy and this was the only product out of the hundreds I've tried that made a real difference.

Revlon Colorstay 24hr Foundation | This formula is one of my favorites for its buildability and staying power. I love the new pump packaging, too! I always loved the Revlon Colorstay Whipped, but I hate the jar packaging so this one called my name and I really love it! It's light enough I can wear it in the summer without looking cakey or too matte but another layer gives me the coverage I need when I need it. I like applying it with a flat top foundation brush for fuller coverage and a beauty blender for a more dewy finish.

Kat Von D Shade & Light Blush in Samson + Delilah | I scored this gem stupid cheap at TJ Maxx early in the year and I have loved it ever since. It's a huge amount and super pigmented, so I know it's going to last me forever. I usually just use one shade or the other, rather than contouring in any way with it like you're supposed to. The light shade is great for those subtle makeup days or days when you're rocking a bold eye or lip look.

*Note: this is now discontinued, but is still available from multiple sellers on Amazon, which I have linked.*

Milani Rose Powder Blush in Romantic Rose | I got this beauty in December, just barely in time to make the cut. I am in love! Not only is the packaging dead gorgeous, the pigmentation blew me away! In the swatch below you'll see it compared to the Kat von D. I did not expect a drugstore blush to be this smooth, buttery and blendable and I really didn't expect such a great color payoff in one swipe. Go Milani! I'm definitely purchasing a few more shades!

Maybelline FitMe Concealer | I confess, this is only like the third concealer I've ever used, but it's such a good dupe for the NARS Radiant Creamy Concealer that I just haven't turned back, so here it sits in the Best in Beauty for another year. I will do my best to branch out more this year, but y'all this one is goodie.

Real Techniques Miracle Complexion Sponge | This beauty blender knockoff is no new invention, but I had to try it out when I saw the flat edge on it. It allows me to blend my concealer right up to my lower lash line and is great for awkward areas like the sides of the nose and temples. It's a great sponge, though not as squishy as some of the cheapie ones I've found at TJ Maxx.

Fresh Rose Face Mask | Sephora always nails their birthday gift and 2016 was no exception. The set came with a soy face wash that wasn't all that remarkable, but I loved this mask! It smells heavenly like a lush rose garden and has pieces of rose petal in the jar! It did a great job making my face feel smooth and hydrated but I think I love it more for the experience of putting it on than the actual results ;) every girl deserves a luxe spa treat now and then!

Morphe Rose Gold Brush Set | I picked this up on a major sale earlier this year and I am so glad I did. I love these soft and supple brushes and I like that they're a little smaller than regular brushes because I have a little more leverage and control that way. The rose gold ferrule is gorgeous of course, but the best part was the travel case that these came with. It's an cylinder with snap buttons on either side so no more squished bristles on my trips to Kentucky!

Simple Cleansing Wipes | These are one of my favorite wipes and I fell in love again after receiving a sample of them from Influenster. They smell good, don't irritate my sensitive skin--even around the eyes--and are nice and thick and soft. I get all of makeup off, even on a full coverage day, with one wipe.

NuMe Silhouette Flat Iron | I will always and forever love CHI the very most, but after having my third CHI die on me after only a couple years I decided to test out another big name brand of the time, NuMe. Lots of vloggers and bloggers have raved about these and I really do love mine! However, DON'T spend full price! NuMe constantly has great deals on their Facebook page and I actually scored mine for about $20 at TJ Maxx a year ago! I've seen NuMe products there since so it's definitely worth a quick look before splurging. The NuMe straightener is great because it gets super hot and straightens my hair just as well as my trusty CHI used to. The only thing I like better about the CHI is that it feels smoother when I'm using it. But if my CHIs are going to keep dying on me and this one lasts more than 2 years, I'll stick to the NuMe!

Marc Jacobs Dot Rollerball | I know this isn't a tool, but I kind of forgot to throw it into I guess skincare? So here it lies. I love love love this scent and the rollerball is perfect for my purse or diaper bag. Sad news: right after I took these photos I knocked it off the table and it shattered! :'( I will have to buy a new one, but at least my entry way smells super good!

L'Oreal Ever Pure Shampoo & Conditioner | These just came out and I am in love! I received them from Influenster free for my review before their release and I've been dying to share them with you. It's such a ligthweight formula that leaves my hair feeling squeaky clean and full and fact, I think it actually is starting to get thicker which makes me so happy! The conditioner in this set is what really wins me over--it's almost like a mousse, so light and fluffy! Most conditioners weigh my hair down like crazy and leave it an oily mess. This one is exactly what I needed and does a great job.

OGX Argan Oil | The best way to beat frizz, tame flyaways and give your hair a sleek but not greasy look is this argan oil. I rub a pea sized amount in my hands and slick it over any frizz or a dime size amount all over damp hair to leave it feeling soft and smelling ah-mazing. This $5 bottle will seriously last you forever.

Revlon Ultimate Shine Top Coat | I'm always on the hunt for a decent but cheap top coat and this one has been a great find! One layer over my favorite polish and my mani lasts over a week. Pretty good for someone who is constantly using and washing their hands!

OPI Don't Bossa Nova Me Around | Another newbie that barely made the 2016 cut. I got this in my stocking for Christmas but it's been on my wishlist for probably a year. I love the muted nude color but even better is its ability to look almost white in daylight but take on a beautiful grey nude in more dim settings. I love it!

Revlon Romantique | This is the nail color that basically embodies my favorite lipsticks above. A pretty, muted mauve pink that's perfect for any season.

Revlon Optimistic | Also fairly new, I picked this up on clearance at Target a while back and just love the bright and cheery hue.

OPI My Favorite Ornament | This one is from Mariah Carey's holiday line from a few years ago but it can still be found on Amazon and eBay. It's THE perfect gold glitter. It's still hard to remove like other glitter polishes but it's not chunky and only takes a coat or two to leave your whole nail sparkling. I love using it as an accent nail or to give all my nails an ombre glitter effect.

  1. I still have my little NARS Rikugien lip pencil and still love it! But thanks for the dupe recommendation - I don't have to fear running out on the NARS one now if I can just easily pick up the Sonia Kashuk version easily :) WIN! And the RT sponge is the best!

  2. Great products! I'm a huge fan of the Nars matte lip pencil and that eyeshadow palette is gorgeous!
