How to Beat Pet Allergies Without Breaking the Bank

When allergy season rolls around once again, most of us stock up on tissues and over the counter medications, bracing ourselves for the suffering to come. But have you ever thought about how your dog handles allergies? Our Boston Terrier, Winston, has always been prone to skin sensitivity and seasonal allergies, but nothing we tried seemed to do the trick--that is, until we changed up his diet! We finally found the perfect dog food for his needs (and our budget!) and the best part is, it's available at Target! Since I know many of you are dog moms like me, I'm going to share our allergy story, and how Purina ONE® dog food totally saved the day!

We've had Winston for 5 years now and it wasn't until we moved out to the country that we really noticed his skin changing. He'd always been a scratcher, but it seemed running through the tall grass and wild foliage was really taking a toll on him. For two full years we filled our calendars with expensive vet visits, tried every dog and human medication recommended, even put socks on his feet, to no avail. He was beginning to hurt himself and was at risk for infection and we didn't know where to turn! Finally, I read that his diet could have an affect on his skin and decided to start testing out some new foods. After much trial and error, we finally settled on Purina ONE® Chicken & Rice Adult Dog Food and we haven't looked back! Their foods are created with carefully selected ingredients in their own USA facilities, and their meticulous quality and safety standards ensure they provide the best nutrition for your pet. It's that extra attention to detail that showed Purina cared about our dog's health and made Purina ONE® the obvious choice for us.

Within a month we were seeing visible differences. What's amazing is we didn't have to bust our budget to keep up the changes. Purina ONE® Chicken & Rice Adult Dog Food is incredibly affordable on it's own, but we always buy it at Target to up our savings even further! Target often has gift card with purchase promos which you can pair with manufacturer's coupons AND Target coupons AND Cartwheel for even more savings!
In fact, right now (9/19-10/13) you can print a coupon for a FREE $5 Target GiftCard™ with a Purina® pet food, litter, and/or treats purchase of $25 or more! You can even save another 5% off + free shipping when you subscribe to Purina ONE® at Target!

In addition to switching up Winston's dog food, here are a few other simple ways we found to really curb any possible flare ups and keep his life as comfortable as possible:

KEEP YOUR GRASS SHORT

Dog allergies are remarkably similar to human allergies, but humans aren't quite so close to the ground when they walk outside! Keeping your yard neat and trimmed will limit how much irritating pollen your dog comes into contact with.

EAT GOOD FOOD

Just like humans need to be cautious of what they eat, our dogs' diet can directly effect their overall health. We had already tried so many of the expensive options with no luck when we realized we needed something that was tailored just for Winston's needs. Every ingredient in the Purina ONE® line has a purpose and their formulas are targeted to meet you pet's special needs! Whether you're looking to boost your pup's energy or see noticeable changes in their skin and coat, there's a Purina ONE® formula just for you! You can shop Winston's favorite flavor by clicking through the photo below:

GIVE HIM A WIPE DOWN

Wiping your pup's paws and coat with a grooming wipe can help capture some of the pollen that bothers him and decrease transfer to his bed.

LAUNDER REGULARLY

Those wipes aren't going to catch everything! How often do you wash your own bedding? Make sure you're cleaning your furry friend's sleeping quarters at least as frequently as your own!

USE THE RIGHT SOAP

When you're done scrubbing your pet's bed, you probably ought to scrub your pet, too! We tried a lot of shampoos with oatmeal and natural ingredients and found those with essential oils really did the trick.

We battled Winston's allergies for so long without answers. I can't believe it's been 3 years since we switched him to Purina® ONE! The results we've seen in him are amazing and I love that we don't have to go broke trying to cure him!

Are you ready to give your dog (or cat!) his best life? You could see a visible difference in 28 days when you make the switch to Purina® ONE. Sign up now to get a $3 off coupon and a personalized food recommendation for your pet!

Parker's Vintage Toddler Room

*Thanks to Lorena Canals for sponsoring this post! All opinions are my own.*

I'm so excited to finally say, "Parker's room is finished!" The poor kid's over 2 years old and just now has a real "theme" to his room! (Second child problems) I knew from the get-go that I wanted to go with a vintage/Americana/antique-y feel, and I think I really nailed all three of those counts! Let's dive into the details:

THE GALLERY WALL

My main request with this gallery wall was that it was intentionally vintage. By that, I mean, not just odds and ends we found in the flea market, but bits and pieces of our real family history, too! I wanted the history to be real and talked about as Parker grew up.

Some of my favorite pieces:

Vintage Paint-by-Number Derby Print // This piece wasn't a family find, but it does have ties! My family lives in Lexington, KY and I spent almost every summer visiting our favorite Bluegrass state, so when we see Derby related things, we buy them!

Vintage Stock Car Race Photographs + Clipping // We found this at an antique mall here in town and just loved that it was a snapshot of local history (it depicts a stock car race here in St Louis). Parker is a vehicle fanatic, so we knew this needed to be part of his wall!

Stuffed Moose Head // Not vintage or particularly special, just cute! Lucy has the stuffed flamingo head on her gallery wall and I just love the way it turns a grown up decor item into a fun, kid-friendly one!

Double Frame Black + White Photos // This is probably my favorite part of the whole wall! On the left of this frame is Preston's grandpa and his sister (Parker's great grandpa and great aunt) water skiing on each other's shoulders! Several generations of his family grew up at Lake of the Ozarks, so water skiing comes before walking for them! On the right, is my favorite photo of my own grandma and grandpa snapped during a charivari! I think my grandma was mortified to be being wheeled through town in a wheelbarrow by my firefighter grandpa, but she was a good sport!

Another fun fact is that the rocking chair in Parker's room actually belonged to my grandpa (the one pushing that wheelbarrow!) and for that reason it's extra special. I wish he could have spent some time rocking Parker in it and telling him stories like he told me.

THE CHALKBOARD RUG

Okay, about this rug....

It's washable!

Yep, this wild child's got nothing on my washing machine and when he inevitably spills (or smears, spits, drips, drops, or flings) something sticky on it, I can roll it up and toss it in my top loader! How COOL is that? Plus it's made with 100% natural cotton and non-toxic dyes, so I don't have to worry about little hands and faces being close to the floor. Lorena Canals is an actual genius company and I honestly don't know how we've survived without washable rugs all this time. Lucy has one in her room as well, and it's been a dream!

What I really loved most about this rug for Parker's room, was the chalkboard style. It made me think of the old blackboards we used in school growing up and being chosen to "clap the erasers" outside at the end of the day! I didn't want the vintage vibes in his room to feel stuffy, and I think the schoolhouse charm this rug provides is the perfect way to make it all feel a little less man-cave. Also fun, Lorena Canals now has cohesive collections that make room decor totally easy! You can mix and match items from multiple collections or stick to just one theme to get the perfect look. You can shop all the super cute kids room inspiration HERE!

Now on to some of the room's other fun features!

THE RUSTIC WOOD WALL

This wall was the first big project we really tackled for his room and I absolutely love the way it turned out! I purchased this 1940's flag on Etsy a long time ago with this vision and it's so exciting to see it finally come to fruition. The basket by his bed adds a little farmhouse flair but makes a great catch-all for stuffed animals. Fun fact, two of those teddy bears were Preston's and mine when we were babies!

THE PEPSI SHELF

This little Pepsi crate turned shelf was Preston's idea and I love how his sexy mind works! He actually found it in his dad's garage and just dusted it off, so it was an easy addition. We decided to keep a baseball theme going for this little shelf; Preston found an antique baseball mitt and included his own replica stadium. I printed off a replica 1930's scorecard and antique photograph of a few Cardinals players to keep that vintage flair, but the Fredbird is a little memento from Parker's first Cardinals game when he was 3 months old! Go Cards!

I'm so thrilled with how Parker's vintage inspired room came out! It's been a long time coming, but it really is all I had pictured and more! I'm so glad to have all this history in one room and not have to worry too much about cleaning up! Below are some of the details (sorry, most of this room isn't exactly shoppable!):

Bare Minimum Travel Makeup Routine

*This post contains affiliate links. Thanks for supporting Like Honey!*

Our weekend at the lake has come to an end and I'm already dreaming of my next couple's only vacation! It's always good to get a little break, even just for a night or two, and does wonders for your marriage! We went away for just 2 nights and spent one full day on the water, so when it came to makeup, I knew I wanted to pack as little as absolutely possible. Here's the breakdown of the items that made the cut:

This blush and highlight duo actually worked as a trio for me! The blush shade in this palette makes a great lid color and the highlight worked as an inner corner highlight as well as allover. No need for a full shadow palette for me! Talk about a space saver!

Okay, truth be told I brought two mascaras and a lash curler with me because I'm extra. Well, actually because my lashes suck, BUT if you only bring one mascara, make it waterproof and make it Lash Paradise! I know the internet's been singing its praises for a while, but it's all for good reason! Seriously, so good!

I just got this beauty in my Macy's Beauty Box and totally love it! It's the perfect warm bronze for summer and has buildable coverage. Plus it claims to be waterproof which may explain why it lasts so long! Bonus: I totally used it as a crease color when doing my eyeshadow on the day of departure--worked like a charm! No eyeshadow palette necessary!

This is my all time favorite foundation. It holds up to sweat, isn't too matte for summer, and lasts all day without a primer--important when trying to pack light! I apply it with my favorite travel beauty blender!

Another Macy's Beauty Box pick that came in clutch! Since this pencil is a trial size, it's on the smaller end and perfect for travel! The formula lasts allll day, so I knew it would hold up under sweat and sun!

Eyeliner is totally optional if you're packing light, but if you really want to whip out that wing, a pencil liner ought to do the trick! This one from L'Oreal actually isn't my favorite, since the ball shaped tip can be difficult to work with, but the formula is amazing and lasts all day without smudges! For lake day, I could make it work!

When I can only choose one lipstick, it's usually a satin finish nude. It's not too matte and not too glossy, goes with every eye look, and doesn't clash with any clothing choices! That's why it was the perfect choice for my bare minimum makeup routine!

SHOP MY TRAVEL MAKEUP MUST HAVES

BONUS: Since we were spending so much time on the water--drinks in hand--I knew my skin would need a quick refresher, as well. Besides sunscreen, here are a few of the top products I brought with me and why:

CLINIQUE DRAMATICALLY DIFFERENT MOISTURIZING LOTION

I picked this up at Ulta a long time ago and it's my favorite moisturizer to travel with. It's tiny, goes a long way, and isn't too heavy or too light so it works year round! It was just the thing to refresh my face after a night of dinner, drinks, and dancing!

MARIO BADESCU ROSE WATER FACIAL SPRAY

I've talked about this facial mist quite a few times (see my Rose Beauty Favorites and Splurge-Worthy High End Favorites), and you know I don't really consider it a game changer in terms of "results". What I DO love it for, is a refreshing mist when my skin is tired or dull, which it frequently was on the boat! This completely woke up my skin after being whipped around wake after wake. I highly recommend it to toss in your bag if you're planning a long day out in the sun!
Another favorite rose beauty product, this balm is sooo refreshing. It's like a thick, creamy moisturizer that can also be used as a mask if used liberally. I liken it to a body cream for your face and it does wonders for hydrating your complexion in a hurry!

FORMULA 10.0.6 SKIN BRIGHTENING PEEL MASK

Everyone knows dehydrated skin is dull skin, so this tightening and brightening peel-off mask was the perfect quick fix and felt so luxurious after a long day on the lake!

SHOP MY TRAVEL BEAUTY PICKS

Do you have a hard time travelling light when it comes to beauty and toiletries? I don't usually downsize my luggage to this degree but it was a nice change not having the stress of all the extra "stuff"!

My Favorite Road Trip Snacks!

No road trip is complete without a few fun snacks and since Preston and I just got back from a fun weekend at the lake, I thought it would be fun to share a few of my favorites with y'all!

SOUR PATCH KIDS // A little sweet, a little sour....like my kids. Just kidding (kind of)! These have always been one of my favorite candies so I had to bring some along!

M&M'S // When it comes to chocolate, I don't discriminate, but it's been so hot out this week I just couldn't justify bringing an actual chocolate bar. Did you know M&Ms were invented after seeing soldiers eating chocolate "pellets" that were made to survive the warm temps? Genius!

DR. PEPPER CHERRY // I'm cherry-obsessed (y'all know my love for Cheerwine knows no bounds) so when I saw Dr. Pepper with extra cherry I was sold! It's so refreshing and delicious to wash down all the fun snack foods.

RITZ CHIPS // For every sugary snack, there has to be a savory one. I just have to have both! I'm not much of a potato chip person, so these cracker-y versions of a classic chip flavor are right up my alley!

There's nothing like a road trip full of snacks and soda to really bring out your inner child! Thankfully some of these are coming with us on the boat Saturday so I won't be eating them all on the road ;) I'm so looking forward to spending this weekend with my husband and a few close friends! It's a much needed break for us! Do you have any Labor Day Weekend plans? I'd love to hear them!
